The Problem We're Solving

Fast fashion is one of the most resource-intensive and wasteful industries in the world. Cheap, trend-driven clothing is produced and discarded at a staggering rate, much of it ending up in landfills within a year of purchase. Teens are a major target of fast fashion marketing, and most have never been taught the actual environmental and labor cost behind a five-dollar t-shirt. At the same time, alternatives like thrifting, clothing swaps, and mending are often seen as inconvenient or unfashionable, even though they can be just as accessible and often more affordable. Shifting these habits early can prevent a lifetime of wasteful consumption.

Foundation

Every chapter participating in YES Threads should:
Host a clothing donation event to collect old, lightly used clothing from teens, and publicize basic facts about fast fashion's environmental impact alongside the event so it doubles as an awareness campaign.
Coordinate a drop-off point or collection system for clothes that don't get swapped, connecting with a local donation or textile recycling program.
This foundation alone builds environmental literacy at scale. Most people don't need to be convinced sustainability matters — they need to be shown exactly what to do about it.

Going Further

Chapters that want to extend their impact can:
Run a mending or upcycling workshop teaching basic sewing repairs and clothing customization, and host your own thrift store in partnership with existing thrift organizations or with clothes that have been collected by your chapter.
Partner with local thrift stores, tailors, or textile recyclers to build an ongoing pipeline for reuse.
Awareness alone rarely changes behavior — repetition and community accountability do. Pairing consistent online content with real-world touchpoints turns passive followers into people who've actually changed a habit, not just read about one.

How We Support You

YES Action is here to help. Chapters working on YES Threads can reach out to us for:
Planning templates and checklists for running a clothing swap
Facts, graphics, and talking points on the impact of fast fashion
Connections to local thrift stores, donation centers, or textile recycling programs
Advice from chapters that have run successful swap or upcycling events

Recognition

As we roll out our chapter recognition system, your chapter's participation in YES Threads will count toward your standing. Chapters that host a clothing donation event paired with fast fashion awareness — and those that go further by running mending workshops or launching their own thrift store — will earn higher recognition.
